  May 9: EUROPE DAY

"The Rape of Europa," Lynn Nicholas and Robert M. Edsel in person.
"The Rape of Europa" undertakes an epic journey through 7countries as vicious whirlwinds of fanaticism, greed, and warfare threaten to wipe out Europe's artistic heritage. For 12 years, the Nazi regime looted and destroyed art on a scale unprecedented in history. However, young European and American art historians and curators fought back, mounting a miraculous campaign that eventually rescued and returned millions of art works displaced by World War II. Joan Allen narrates this breathtaking chronicle about the battle over the very survival of centuries of western culture. (Richard Berge, Bonni Cohen & Nicole Newnham, 2005, high-definition video, 120 minutes)

European Union Ambassadors will celebrate Europe Day, May 9, by becoming substitute teachers at schools in the District, Maryland and Virginia. Other events, as well.
