European Week in the USA to celebrate the
50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome: A variety of events reaching the
widest possible audience, all coordinated by the European Commission’s
Delegation in Washington, will be hosted by European embassies in
Washington, consulates in other major US cities, EU Centers of Excellence,
universities, public policy institutes and local partner organizations
around the country.
The theme of the week will be European unity as well as 50 years of
successful relations between Americans and Europeans. The focus will be on
the historic ties between the EU and the US and highlighting half a
century of cooperation. The European Union celebrating 50 years of Peace,
Prosperity and Partnership will be a recurrent theme in many speeches and
public addresses throughout the year.
During European Week, the Delegation will organize a reception at the
Italian Embassy including a preview of the cultural project European
Poetry in Motion. The project will present European poetry during the
month of May 2007 on local metro subway and bus systems in the Washington
metropolitan area.

The 27 Member States of the European Union
celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Signing of the Treaties of Rome. As
Germany currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European
Union, the
Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the US, Dr. Klaus
Scharioth, hosts the official celebratory event in honor of this
occasion at his Residence.
DC area university students have been invited to present their vision for
the future of the EU, as well as for EU/US relations. At the event, select
students present their ideas to the invited audience of the Head of
the Delegation of the European Commission to the United States, the
Ambassadors of EU Member States and other influential individuals. The
celebration offers the opportunity for tomorrow's leaders to interact
directly with today's EU leaders. 2 pm:

"The EU at 50: Where Has It Been and Where Is It Going?” House of
Sweden
This all-day conference examines how far the EU has fulfilled
the aspirations of its Founding Fathers in its first half century and
where it is likely to go from here – notably with respect to its world
role, its relations with the US, further enlargement and the search for
deeper or new forms of European integration. Speakers include
prominent European and US policy-makers and officials and Ambassadors

This special meeting discusses the EU's recently-released Energy Policy
for Europe and explores the energy relationship with

"The Rape of Europa" undertakes an epic journey through 7countries as
vicious whirlwinds of fanaticism, greed, and warfare threaten to wipe out
