First Anniversary of London Bombings

Today marks the first anniversary of the July 7 London transit attacks, in which 52 people were killed and 700 injured by four terrorist bombs.

José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, said today, "Our thoughts are with the victims and relatives of the London bombings and all victims of terrorism." President Barroso also affirmed and renewed the EU's determination and commitment to stand up against terrorism. "Preventing and combating terrorism has become one of the EU's greatest challenges. The Commission is fully aware that threats to security are one of [the] main worries of a vast majority of Europeans. 8 out of 10 European citizens believe that Europe can do more in this area. The Commission will continue to bring forward a package of initiatives to assist in the fight against terrorism."
