A Message from Ambassador John Bruton on the Fifth Anniversary of 9/11

Five years ago today the earth literally shook as three terrorist-piloted planes struck the Twin Towers and the Pentagon while a fourth crashed into a Pennsylvania field. On this sad anniversary, the European Union remembers America's great loss and all the victims of the worst act of terrorism in U.S. history.

9/11 reverberated on both sides of the Atlantic and around the world. We in the EU became even more acutely aware of the fundamental threat posed by a new brand of terrorism and have since suffered attacks ourselves in Madrid and London. The EU, along with the U.S. and many other countries, has dramatically stepped up counterterrorism efforts and security precautions at home and abroad.

It is also important to recognize today the unheralded transatlantic success story that is EU-U.S. cooperation in the fight against terrorism. Click here to read the latest issue of EU Insight, which discusses the EU's counterterrorism strategy and our close working relationship with the U.S. in the struggle.
