European Commission Aid to Afghanistan Hits 1 Billion Euro Mark

The European Commission has now committed 1 billion euros ($1.3 billion) to the reconstruction and development process in Afghanistan, fulfilling an earlier pledge. As one of the largest international donors in the country, the Commission has helped combat illegal drug production by supporting rural development and alternative livelihoods and contributing to the salaries of thousands of law enforcement officers. European assistance has also provided for the rehabilitation of over a hundred clinics and hospitals and funded work on infrastructure, employment generation, mine clearing, refugee repatriation, and governance/institution building. Total EU aid (European Commission and Member States combined) exceeds two billion euros.
