EU Approves REACH Chemical Safety Plan

The European Union has passed a new, EU-wide chemical safety law, REACH, creating an integrated system for the registration, evaluation, authorization, and restrictions of chemical substances. REACH will ensure better information flow about the hazardous properties of chemicals and risks associated with their use while obliging industry, rather than government, to provide adequate information for safe handling of substances. EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas noted that "REACH is the most ambitious chemicals legislation in the world... and will help improve citizens' health and avoid environmental damage. REACH will also encourage innovation in the chemicals industry and increase consumer confidence."
