EU Moves To Improve Aviation Security

Following last month's foiled terrorist plot in the United Kingdom, the European Union's Regulatory Committee for Civil Aviation Security moved last week to improve procedures at screening checkpoints and made considerable progress on efforts to mitigate the threat of liquid explosives.

The Committee noted that a common European response to address aviation threats is urgent. Underscoring the importance of EU-U.S. cooperation, the Committee exchanged views with Assistant Secretary Kip Hawley of the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to discuss improving transatlantic coordination on aviation security measures.

Following yesterday's meeting of the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) Technical Taskforce in London and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Aviation Security Panel meeting this week in Montreal, the EU will push for swift final decisions on outstanding issues.
