EU Launches Consultations on Galileo Usage

The European Union announced Friday it will seek comments during a four-month public consultation period on the best possible uses of the global satellite navigation system known as Galileo. When fully operational in 2011, Galileo — as the flagship of European space policy — is expected to have a number of uses including weather tracking and traffic navigation. "The real value linked to the costs and efforts undertaken to bring Galileo into orbit is that it presents a unique opportunity for new applications, economic growth and job creation in the European Union," said European Commission Vice President Jacques Barrot, responsible for Transport. "These economic returns are many times higher than the costs of the system itself."
