EU, China Strengthen Cooperation in Science &
Technology
Yesterday marked the launch of
China-EU Science and Technology Year to promote cooperation in all
fields of science, research, and technology. At a policy forum in
Brussels focused on areas including health, energy, environment,
food and biotechnology, European Commissioner for Science and
Research Janez Potocnik said, "China is quickly becoming a major
global player in science and technology. We face many of the same
challenges for the future, and research can play a part in facing
them... [China-EU Science and Technology Year] will usher in a new
phase of our science and research relationship."
The EU and China have a history of cooperation in science and
technology dating from the 1980s and including an official
cooperation agreement most recently renewed in 2004. China is one of
the largest country partners under the EU Resarch & Development
Framework Program, with over 130 joint research projects worth
nearly 900 million Euros under way or in preparation, and has joined
the EU on major international efforts such as ITER, an experimental
fusion energy research initiative, and the Galileo satellite
navigation project.
