EU Funds New Research into Avian and Pandemic Influenza

The European Commission has announced 28 million euros ($35 million) in new funding for research on avian and pandemic influenza. Projects will focus on the flu virus itself, vaccine development, diagnosis and early warning systems, technology transfer and development of a network for monitoring migratory birds. The new efforts include cooperation with non-EU countries, such as the United States, and will supplement 21 million euros of other flu research work funded by the Commission.
