EU Pushes for Progress at Nairobi Climate Change Conference

The European Union will push for greater global progress in the battle against climate change at the annual UN Climate Change Conference, starting today in Nairobi. The first such gathering held in sub-Saharan Africa, the conference will focus on the needs of Africa and other developing countries as well as the international response post-2012, the end of the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol. "Developing countries in Africa and elsewhere are likely to be hit hardest by climate change but they are the ones least able to cope," said EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas. "We must take concrete steps to help developing countries adapt to climate change and thus reduce its risks."
