EU Commits Additional 40 Million Euros in Humanitarian Aid for Darfur

In Darfur, European Commission President José Manuel Barroso announced that the EU has allocated a further 40 million euros ($50 million) for life-saving humanitarian assistance to the victims of the Darfur crisis in Sudan. The funding would provide for food aid, airlifts to less-accessible areas, and other services. Since 2004, the Commission has provided over 340 million euros of humanitarian assistance in Darfur.

EU Development & Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Louis Michel expressed "deep concern" about the plight of Darfurians whose access to aid was threatened. "I call on the authorities and the rebel movements to respect their obligations and do what is needed to ensure the safety of civilians and humanitarian workers alike."
