The EU & Post-Tsunami Reconstruction: Two Years Later

Two years after the devastating tsunami that hit Southeast Asia, EU Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner has noted the on-the-ground success of reconstruction work – "families are taking up work and progressively moving into their new homes, people are using the new roads, and renewed education and social services are becoming available." The EU – European Commission and Member States together – has played a leading role in the overall international effort, providing over two billion euros ($2.6 billion) for humanitarian assistance and reconstruction in response to the crisis.
