Test CO2 Storage Facility Launched in Germany

EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs hailed the official launch of a pilot CO2 storage facility in Ketzin, Germany yesterday. "Underground storage of CO2 may contribute to the technological progress that should make carbon sequestration and storage… a reality after 2020," said Commissioner Piebalgs.

The project will test different ways of injecting CO2 underground and establish reliable practices for monitoring the long-term stability of stored CO2. The pilot storage installation—the first of its kind onshore in Europe—is the core of a 30 million euro initiative to which the EU provided nearly nine million euros in research funding.
