Mandelson: A Deciding Moment for Doha

EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson called today for G8 leaders and emerging economy leaders to help complete the Doha Round of world trade talks.  "We need the personal and active engagement of the leaders of the major economies to authorize the compromises to be made on all sides that will deliver a deal that is ambitious, balanced and fair," said Commissioner Mandelson.

He added, "The political stakes are very high. This seems to be leading negotiators, as we approach the deciding moment, to harden their positions rather than offering compromise and flexibility….  I will continue to insist on the basic principle that there should be real cuts and effective reductions from all key players and in all key areas….  There must be proportional effort between developed and developing countries, but real efforts have to be made.  That is the only basis on which these negotiations can be concluded."
