EU Welcomes Draft Aviation Agreement with U.S.

Jacques Barrot, EU Commission Vice President and Commissioner for Transportation, announced today that the EU and the U.S. have concluded a draft agreement to create an open aviation area between Europe and America. Noting that an EU-U.S. agreement would encompass 60 percent of world air traffic, Commissioner Barrot said, ''We have an opportunity to unlock major benefits on both sides of the Atlantic. In economic terms, this unprecedented agreement … could be worth up to 12 billion euro in economic benefits and up to 80,000 new jobs. The open aviation area could be a centerpiece for a reinvigorated transatlantic relationship."
