EU Agriculture Commissioner in Missouri: EU Agriculture Policy, Doha, Biofuels

Speaking at the World Agriculture Forum in St. Louis, Missouri earlier this week, EU Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel concentrated  on EU agriculture policies, the Doha Round of world trade negotiations, and the importance of biofuels in addressing climate change and energy security.

On bio-energy and bio-fuels, Commissioner Fischer Boel noted the new market opportunities for the agricultural sector but cautioned that bio-fuels were not a panacea and reaffirmed the EU's commitment to steep reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

On Doha, she stressed the need for “balance in the agricultural section of the talks [and] balances between agriculture, services, and industrial tariffs.”

And on modifications to the EU's Common Agricultural Policy she discussed the “decoupling” of EU farm payments from production to boost productivity and allow the market to dictate production decisions.
