EU to Boost Pakistan Aid, Strengthen Trade Ties

The European Commission has proposed boosting aid to Pakistan by 200 million
euros over the next four years (on top of
assistance provided by individual Member States). Meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz in Brussels, EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner observed that Commission efforts in Pakistan are aimed at fighting poverty and helping Pakistan along the path to stable development.

EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson affirmed that the Union is committed to strengthening trade ties with Pakistan, which already enjoys preferential EU market access under the Union's Generalized System of Preferences, the world's widest and most generous. EU-Pakistan trade, growing at about 30 percent annually, totalled seven billion euros in 2005.
