EU to Send Election Observation Mission for Nigerian General Elections

The European Commission will send an EU Election Observation Mission to cover the upcoming Nigerian general elections in April. Led by Max van den Berg (the Netherlands), a Member of the European Parliament, the mission will deploy short and long-term personnel to observe the ongoing campaign, the elections themselves, and the post-election period. EU Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner said, “These elections are crucial for Nigeria to entrench the democratic change that began in the late 1990s. Credible elections are very important for the long-term stability of Nigeria."
