EU Lifts Import Restrictions on U.S. Grain

The EU moved this week to lift the requirement that all EU imports of U.S. corn gluten feed and brewers' grain be certified as free from the Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) Bt10. Certification was introduced in April 2005 following a U.S. alert that Bt10 had been inadvertently exported to the EU, but the last case of Bt10 detected in the U.S. was in early November 2005 and the company responsible for developing the GMO has taken measures to ensure that it is no longer propagated. As a precautionary measure, Member States must continue to carry out random testing for Bt10 for six months.
