EU Lifts Import Restrictions on U.S.
Grain
The EU moved this week to lift the requirement that all EU
imports of U.S. corn gluten feed and brewers' grain be certified as
free from the Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) Bt10.
Certification was introduced in April 2005 following a U.S. alert
that Bt10 had been inadvertently exported to the EU, but the last
case of Bt10 detected in the U.S. was in early November 2005 and the
company responsible for developing the GMO has taken measures to
ensure that it is no longer propagated. As a precautionary measure,
Member States must continue to carry out random testing for Bt10 for
six months.
