Commissioner Kuneva Meets with Mattel on Toy Safety

EU Consumer Affairs Commissioner Meglena Kuneva met today with the Vice President of Mattel International, Bryan Stockton, to discuss follow-up to the three major recalls of Mattel toys this summer. Following the meeting, Commissioner Kuneva said, "I underlined to Mattel that I will continue to be a vocal defender of open markets and open economies but never at the expense of safety… The clear legal responsibility is on producers to put only safe products on the market and no one is going to take that responsibility off their shoulders…

"Mattel told us this morning that they [have] introduced a new 3 stage safety check program covering the checks of the raw material, manufacturing process and the finished product [and are] working now on enforcement by certifying the suppliers and increasing the frequency of random, unannounced inspections… The trust of consumers is crucial for them and they will only regain the confidence of consumers based on concrete results."
