European Commission: Redouble EU Biotechnology Efforts
to Boost Competitiveness
In a mid-term review of the EU's
Strategy on Life Sciences and Biotechnology, the European Commission
has proposed a renewed focus on innovation, research, market
development, ethical issues, and streamlined regulation in the
biotechnology field to promote a competitive, knowledge-based
"bioeconomy" in Europe.
EU Research and Development Commissioner Janez Potocnik said,
"Life sciences and biotechnologies are playing a vital role for the
competitiveness of our industry but I [also see] an important role
in facing challenges such as the perils of oil dependence, global
warming, food security and population health."
