European Commission: Redouble EU Biotechnology Efforts to Boost Competitiveness

In a mid-term review of the EU's Strategy on Life Sciences and Biotechnology, the European Commission has proposed a renewed focus on innovation, research, market development, ethical issues, and streamlined regulation in the biotechnology field to promote a competitive, knowledge-based "bioeconomy" in Europe.

EU Research and Development Commissioner Janez Potocnik said, "Life sciences and biotechnologies are playing a vital role for the competitiveness of our industry but I [also see] an important role in facing challenges such as the perils of oil dependence, global warming, food security and population health."
