EU Stands Against Death Penalty at Global Gathering

The EU Presidency issued a statement on the occasion of the Third World Congress Against the Death Penalty, beginning today in Paris. Reiterating longstanding and active opposition to the death penalty, the Presidency affirmed that the EU “will continue to oppose [capital punishment] in all cases and under all circumstances because it considers the death penalty to be a cruel and inhuman punishment.” The Presidency observed that recent years have seen considerable progress in efforts to abolish the death penalty, while acknowledging that death sentences and executions remain all too frequent in many countries.
