EU Stands Against Death Penalty at Global
Gathering
The EU Presidency issued a statement on the occasion of the Third
World Congress Against the Death Penalty, beginning today in Paris.
Reiterating longstanding and active opposition to the death penalty,
the Presidency affirmed that the EU “will continue to oppose
[capital punishment] in all cases and under all circumstances
because it considers the death penalty to be a cruel and inhuman
punishment.” The Presidency observed that recent years have seen
considerable progress in efforts to abolish the death penalty, while
acknowledging that death sentences and executions remain all too
frequent in many countries.
