EU, U.S. Launch Transatlantic Effort to Curb Aircraft Emissions

Jacques Barrot, European Commission Vice President and Commissioner for Transport, and Marion Blakey, Administrator of the United States Federal Aviation Administration, today launched AIRE, a transatlantic initiative to reduce emissions from airliners.

Joined by aircraft industry representatives for the event, Vice President Barrot said, "The future of the aviation industry depends on its ability to combat climate change through innovation and greater efficiency, and this initiative will enable us to speed up the application of technologies and procedures having a direct impact on greenhouse gas emissions."

AIRE supplements two other European Commission initiatives aimed at making aviation "greener." The Commission has proposed including aviation in the EU's carbon emissions trading system and just last week launched its Clean Sky initiative to support the development of the next generation of clean aircraft.
