European Commission Reiterates Support for Iraq at Neighbors Meeting

EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner is representing the European Commission in Egypt as Iraq, its neighbors, and key world leaders consider the current situation in Iraq. "The Commission is committed to working towards an Iraq which is secure, stable and economically prosperous—an Iraq in peace and enjoying constructive relations with its neighbors," said Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner.

The European Commission is participating in the new International Compact for Iraq, a new Iraqi government partnership with the international community to help Iraq move towards peace and political and economic reconstruction. Between 2003 and 2006, the Commission provided 718.5 million euros in assistance to Iraq, focusing on basic services, job creation, capacity building, support of the political process, including elections, and humanitarian relief. Last year, the Commission opened negotiations on a Trade and Cooperation Agreement with Iraq.
