EU Commits to Steeper Greenhouse Gas Reductions, Calls for More

Continuing Europe's leading role on fighting climate change, the EU has agreed to independently reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20 percent by the year 2020 (against 1990 levels), while calling for industrialized nations countries to collectively commit to even steeper reductions with an eye to lessening emissions by 60 to 80 percent by 2050. EU Establishes Rights Agency

The new European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights begins work on March 1, providing the EU and Member States with legal assistance and expertise on fundamental rights matters when implementing EU law. The Agency will also provide EU institutions and Member States with data and information on rights protection in the Union. MORE


Fischer Boel on EU Agriculture, Doha, and the U.S. Farm Bill

In a speech before the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington recently, EU Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel addressed the need for successful completion of the Doha Round of world trade talks, as well as changes in the EU's Common Agricultural Policy and the upcoming U.S. farm bill. European Coastal Waters Already Affected by Global Warming

A report from the European Commission's Joint Research Centre details the effects climate change is already having on Europe's coastal waters and regional seas, including European coastal and marine habitats. MORE

 


Proposal to Boost Trade Within EU Member States

EU Commission Vice President and Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry Guenter Verheugen presented a proposal to smooth the functioning of the EU's "internal market" for goods traded between EU Member States, noting that "The internal market is our biggest asset in view of promoting growth and jobs in the EU. There is still much room to improve the free movement of goods [within the Union]." MORE
