EU Commission President Barroso: G8 Must Push for Action on Climate Change

In Berlin yesterday, EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso noted the evolving positions from the U.S. and China as "steps forward" and spelled out the importance of this week's G8 Summit in Heiligendamm to the global effort on climate change. President Barroso outlined four main objectives for the G8:

• Reaching a common understanding of the global scope of climate change and the need for urgent action.
• Generating political momentum in the run-up to the UN Climate Change Conference that will consider post-Kyoto arrangements (after December 2007).
• Setting the objective of a long-term target for reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
• Committing the G8 to work towards a global climate change agreement by 2009.
