Hong Kong Journalist Leu Siew Ying Wins EU Human Rights Reporting Prize

On International Press Freedom Day, Hong Kong-based journalist Leu Siew Ying received the European Commission's annual human rights journalism prize for her report “From Village Protest to National Flashpoint,” which tells the story of villagers in Guangzhou/Southern China who try to recall their elected leader for suspected corruption. Fourteen other journalists also received Natali Prizes for their articles on human rights and democracy.

The EU's Development and Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Louis Michel noted that "principled and skilled journalists are vital to the defense of democracy and human rights. Without democracy, without freedom of the press, development cannot be sustainable.” Michel used the occasion to call for the release of the BBC's Gaza correspondent Alan Johnston, who has been held hostage since March 12th. The Natali Prize commemorates Lorenzo Natali, a former EU Development Commissioner and a fervent defender of human rights.
