Bruton Highlights Strong California-EU Relationship in Senate
Address In a special presentation before the California State
Senate Select Committee on California-European Trade, Ambassador
John Bruton, Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to
the United States, highlighted the importance of European trade and
investment for the creation of jobs and business opportunities in
California.
"There is more European investment in California
alone that there is American investment in China," said Ambassador
Bruton.
He noted that the EU's robust economic relationship with the
state of California is a reflection of the larger transatlantic
relationship. The EU is by far the biggest foreign investor in the
United States. Two out of every three dollars invested in the United
States by countries outside the U.S. are invested by Member States
of the European Union. Likewise, Europe is America's largest single
destination for its investment dollars.
"While the world watches the rise of China and Asia, the deep,
interconnected, and historical relationship between the EU and the
United States continues to be — as characterized by transatlantic
leaders — the indispensable partnership."
Ambassador Bruton also discussed the protection of intellectual
property rights, multilateral trade agreements, and climate change.
