EU Continues to Deploy Assistance to
Conflict-Stricken Region of Georgia
The European Union is now providing support
at ground level for around 100,000 civilians in areas affected by
the recent conflict. Following the ceasefire, the European Union is
able to provide shelter, food, and medical supplies to those most in
need. Support is being sent by EU Member States--with France,
Austria and Slovakia leading a joint European aid flight. All aid is
being coordinated through the European Commission's Monitoring and
Information Centre (MIC), and its deployment on the ground will be
facilitated by an EU team of experts already in place.
This assistance comes in addition to the humanitarian aid the
Commission provided immediately following the outbreak of the
fighting. MORE
