EU Conference Gathers Female Leaders

Ahead of International Women's Day, female power brokers from around the world gathered in Brussels today to discuss security and women's empowerment. The Conference, "Women: Stabilizing an Insecure World," brought together more than 50 female heads of states, ministers, heads of international organizations, business leaders, and civil society activists. The United States was represented by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

"All humanity loses out if women are not empowered to play their part in building stability in our insecure world," said EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner, who hosted the conference. "The challenges to human security cannot be tackled without the contribution women make. That is where we, as women whose voices count, have a role to play. We must rise to the challenge and push for change – for if we don't, who will?"
