European Commission President Barroso on the Elections in Serbia

European Commission President José Manuel Barroso congratulated Boris Tadić on his re-election as President of Serbia and said the result was "a victory for democracy in Serbia and for shared European values."

"We wish to accelerate Serbia's progress towards the European Union," said President Barroso. "We believe that closer ties with the EU will not only enhance the role of Serbia on the international stage but will contribute to greater prosperity and well-being for the Serbian people (...) Serbia has demonstrated its ability to assume the responsibilities of a modern and democratic state. I trust you will build on these achievements in tackling the challenges ahead. Your victory comes at a critical moment for Serbia and for the Western Balkans. I am confident that Serbia will continue to play a constructive role in facing up to current challenges and in ensuring stability in the region."
