EU-U.S. Launch Joint Research Project on Airline Alliances

The European Commission today announced a joint research project with the U.S. Department of Transportation to look at the growth of airline alliances, the effect of alliances on airline competition, and possible changes in the role of alliances following the EU-U.S. Air Transport Agreement.

The EU-U.S. Air Transport Agreement, commonly referred to as the "Open Skies Agreement," will come into force at the end of March and will enhance competition by allowing EU and U.S. airlines to serve any routes between Europe and the United States. The agreement is expected to result in 26 million additional passengers crossing the Atlantic, generate more than €15 billion benefits for consumers, and create 80,000 new jobs in the EU and the U.S. combined over a five-year period.

Research findings are to be published in mid-2009.
