EUROPEAN COMMISSION PRESIDENT PRODI
CONGRATULATES US PRESIDENT BUSH ON HIS RE-ELECTION
"My warm congratulations to President Bush on his re-election after a
difficult ballot whose outcome was far from sure. As the country's leader in the
most dramatic time of its history, he has had to deal with the horrifying onslaught
of terrorism. I hope
his second term will see the United States and the whole world enjoy the political
stabilisation and the guarantee of collective security we have all done our utmost
to ensure. Europe will continue to work to strengthen its bonds of
friendship and cooperation with the United States. Those bonds, which have
never been called into question, are vital to maintaining peace in the world on
the basis of multilaterally shared principles and values."
President Prodi also sent the following letter to President Bush today:
“Dear President Bush,
"On behalf of the European Commission, I should like to extend my sincere
congratulations to you on your re-election as President of the United States of
America.
"The United States and the European Union are each others most important
partners. The strength of the Transatlantic relationship is vital not only for
the peoples of Europe and the United States but also for the wider world community.
"The European Commission is committed to strengthening this partnership and
looks forward to working with you and your Administration during your second presidential
term to jointly address the major policy issues ahead of us.
"Please accept, dear President, the assurance of my highest consideration.
Romano Prodi"
