BACK ON TRACK: EU COMMISSION PRESIDENT-DESIGNATE BARROSO ANNOUNCES NEW TEAM

Today EU Commission President-Designate Barroso announced he has put the finishing touches to the new team he intends to present to the European Parliament for its approval. Changes to the original team are limited to three policy areas to include two new faces. The Justice, Freedom and Security portfolio has now been entrusted to new nominee Franco Frattini, currently Italy’s Foreign Affairs Minister. The new Latvian nominee, Andris Piebalgs, his country’s former Ambassador to the EU, will handle the Energy portfolio. Finally, Hungarian nominee Lazlo Kovacs will now cover Taxation and Customs issues. Mr. Barroso will present the new team at a specially arranged meeting with the leaders of the European Parliament’s political groupings. The meeting should also deliver a timetable for the Parliament to vote on the new team.

Mr. Barroso said: “We are back on track. I have moved swiftly to finalise a team that is balanced and of high quality. The members have a broad range of political experience and in-depth knowledge of the EU and its policies.”
