EUROPEAN AMBASSADORS REACH OUT TO AREA YOUTH ON EUROPE DAY, MAY 9TH

Over a dozen European ambassadors will celebrate Europe Day by teaching high school students in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. The holiday marks the anniversary of the historic May 9, 1950 Schuman Declaration, which called on France, Germany and other countries to pool together their coal and steel production as “the first concrete foundation of a European federation.”  This vision for a lasting peace between the peoples of Europe proved to be the first step towards the creation of what we now know as the European Union (EU).

European Union Ambassador John Bruton and twelve ambassadors from the family of EU Member States will teach high school classes a lesson on the European Union on May 9 and 10. They will also provide classroom materials, including maps of the newly enlarged European Union and online resources geared specifically to youth. Both public and private schools have signed on to host the ambassadors.

“My job is to help Americans understand what the European Union is and why it is important to them,” says Bruton. “Talking to students is not only one of the most rewarding parts of my job, it’s one of the most important. These are the future American leaders.”
