Javier Solana

Washington, January 17, 2006

MEDIA ADVISORY

Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the CFSP, Visits New York and Washington, DC, 16-18 January 2006

Javier Solana, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), is visiting New York and Washington, DC, from Monday, January 16, until Wednesday, January 18, 2006. On January 16, Mr. Solana visited New York, where he met with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan as well as several senior UN diplomats. In addition, the High Representative attended a breakfast discussion hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations.

On January 17, the High Representative traveled to Washington, DC, where he meets with Attorney General Gonzalez and other senior US officials. On January 18, Mr. Solana will discuss the latest developments with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Deputy Secretary of State Robert B. Zoellick. The High Representative will also meet with National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley. In addition, Mr. Solana is scheduled to meet with Republican Senator Chuck Hagel and Democratic Senator Hillary Clinton.

The visit provides an opportunity to discuss a broad spectrum of issues in the framework of EU/US relations and to exchange views on foreign policy issues of common concern, including Iran, the Middle East, the Western Balkans and Africa--in particular regional developments in Sudan/Darfur and DRC Congo.
