EU TROIKA MEETS WITH SECRETARY RICE

External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, whose country holds the rotating Presidency of the European Union, and EU High Representative Javier Solana met today with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to prepare the US-EU Summit to be held April 30 in Washington. During their meeting, they also discussed the situation in the Middle East, including the formation of a new Palestinian government, Iran's nuclear program, deployment of a missile defense in Europe and the current situation in Iraq and Afghanistan.

At the joint press conference following the meeting, Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner (right)said regarding the formation of a new Palestinian government that "[…] it is very important that in this delicate moment we at least can go on with our temporary international mechanisms and that we prolong this for another three months in order to see that the Palestinian people will not suffer."
