EU AMBASSADORS CELEBRATE EUROPE DAY AT LOCAL SCHOOLS

European Union Ambassadors will celebrate Europe Day, May 9, by becoming substitute teachers at schools in the District, Maryland and Virginia.

Europe Day marks the historic day in 1950 when French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman called on France, Germany and other countries to combine their coal and steel production under a single European institution. Following the Schuman Declaration, the European Economic Community (EEC) of 6 nations was established by the Treaty of Rome in 1957 leading to what we now know as the European Union of 27 nations. This year's Europe Day will celebrate 50 years of peace, stability, and economic integration in Europe.

Ambassador John Bruton, Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to the United States, will be joined by colleagues from 25 EU Member State embassies in talking to students about the European Union at 26 public and private area schools. They will also provide classroom materials for both teachers and students, including interactive resources. The teaching sessions will take place between May 2 and May 11, with most of the Ambassadors teaching on Europe Day itself.
