"Over the next five years I want to contribute...towards a Europeanization of our energy policy. We need a comprehensive paradigm shift in energy policy...I see myself as a moderator, not an ambassador for nuclear power...Our goal must be to bring the raw material, under fair conditions and with planning security, into the European market and then to make it available to every national market and industrial purchaser, but on the same terms."
– Günther Oettinger The European Union and the United States share a long tradition working together to promote strong economic growth. This is pursued through multilateral and bilateral mechanisms. Bilaterally, the EU-US annual presidential Summits have fostered cooperation. Ensuring security of energy supply, developing competitive markets and meeting the environmental challenges are at the top of the EU and US political agendas. The EU and the US have agreed to develop a strategic cooperation on energy and energy security, presented in a joint declaration at the EU-US Vienna Presidential Summit on June 21, 2006. This cooperation will contribute to increased regional stability, greater security of supply and finally, new business opportunities. The dialogue with the US is part of the EU external policy to serve Europe’s energy interests. EU Energy Policy is reflected in the European Commission’s Green Paper of March 8, 2006: “A European Strategy for Sustainable, Competitive and Secure Energy.” It aims to meet three core objectives: sustainable development, competitiveness, and security of supply. As part of the energy cooperation, the EU and the US have initialed a new Energy Star EU-US Agreement on the coordination of energy-efficient labeling programs for office equipment. Energy Star is part of the European Community strategy to manage energy demand better, contribute to security of energy supply and mitigate climate change.
