
EU Continues to Provide Aid to Haiti

EU financial support for aid transport has reached €3 million. Civil protection assistance main focus is currently shelter. With rain & hurricane season starting in April, helpers are now seeking more permanent shelter solutions, including plastic sheeting. More than 250,000 people are thought to have already received emergency shelter. Sanitation is also a major concern at many spontaneous settlements. As to medical care, more specialists such as physiotherapists are needed to provide post-operative amputee care. Two EU Rapid Response Capability units – a water purification unit & an advanced medical post with surgery - continue operations in Port-au-Prince & Leogane. Read more; Daily Update; Background

European Parliament Approves New European Commission

The European Parliament elected the new European Commission by 488 votes to 137, with 72 abstentions, in Strasbourg on Tuesday, Feb. 9. The vote took the form of a single ballot on the whole College of Commissioners, consisting of one Commissioner from each of the 27 EU Member States. European Commission President Barroso said: "What Europe needs to succeed is policies focused on results, better governance structures and confidence in our own ability to solve the problems we face. Our common currency, the euro, will continue to constitute a major tool for our development and those who think it can be put in question must realise we will stick to our course. The European Commission has launched a public consultation through March 12 on a future EU-US data protection and information sharing agreement. The consultation aims at gathering the views of stakeholders and the public at large on the basis of a discussion paper as part of the preparatory work for the recommendation to authorise the negotiation of a future EU-US agreement.
