HIGH-LEVEL VISIT FROM THE WORLD JEWISH CONGRESS CLEARS
THE WAY FOR THE ANTI-SEMITISM SEMINAR
The
President of the Commission, Mr.
Romano Prodi, received today the Chairman of the Governing Board of the World
Jewish Congress, Mr. Israel Singer from New York.
Mr.
Singer delivered to Mr. Prodi a letter by the President of the World Jewish Congress,
Mr. Edgar M. Bronfman. In this
letter Mr. Bronfman expressed his deep appreciation for Mr. Prodi personally
and in his capacity as President of the European Commission. He also asked for
an appointment for himself and for the President of the European Jewish Congress,
Mr. Cobi Benatoff, so as to solve the
controversy that has arisen in the past days.
It
was agreed that this meeting will take place within the next 15 days.
Following
the meeting with Mr. Singer the President said that the co-operation between the
European Commission and the World and European Jewish Congresses can now be fully
restored on the basis of complete, mutual trust.
This
will also allow immediately resuming the preparations for the planned high-level
seminar on anti-Semitism.
