EU/South Africa Summit

The very first summit between the EU and South Africa is being held in Bordeaux, France. With this summit, EU-South Africa relations are visibly put on a higher level - making South Africa a true strategic partner. EU Council French President Nicolas Sarkozy, European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and EU Development Commissioner Louis Michel meet South African President Thabo Mbeki to discuss current political, security and social issues such as migration, climate change, peace and security. Iraqi Refugees' Reception in EU Member States

"The situation in Iraq has major humanitarian consequences: some 4,7 million Iraqis have been uprooted; the number of persons displaced within the country is today estimated by the UNHCR at over 2,7 million; according to the same source, some 2 million Iraqis are living in neighbouring States...The [EU] Council noted that some [EU] Member States were already taking in Iraqi refugees in the framework of their resettlement programmes...The Council would point to the potential for financing refugee resettlement under Decision No 573/2007/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council establishing the European Refugee Fund for the period 2008 to 2013." EU/Mexico 3rd Civil Society Forum Invitation

The European Commission, in coordination with the Mexican Government and with the collaboration of the European Economic and Social Committee, is pleased to invite representatives of Mexican and European civil society organizations and other organizations interested in EU-Mexico relations to the EU/Mexico Civil Society Dialogue Forum between the EU and Mexico, which will take place in Brussels on November 13 and 14, 2008. This Forum aims at encouraging a dialogue among civil society organizations, Mexican authorities and the European Commission in order to promote the participation of civil society in relations between the two parties. "This process of magnifying so-called 'gaffes' in political campaigning is really an abuse of free speech. In fact, it achieves the opposite of what was intended by those who promulgated the right of free speech. Emphasis on gaffes inhibits free expression and stifles the sort of honest debate that might enable voters to make voting choices in full knowledge of the options that really exist. It thus prevents them taking their share of responsibility in the difficult decision-making which the people they elect will eventually be obliged to undertake." Read more
