INTERNSHIPS WITH THE
PRESS TEAM, PRESS &
PUBLIC DIPLOMACY SECTION
Washington Delegation
Press Room
 The
Delegation of the European Commission represents the European Union in
Washington. It functions like an embassy. The Delegation represents the
European Commission in its dealings with the US Government on a broad range
of issues. It reports on current political developments in the United States
to the headquarters in Brussels and acts as a liaison with other
international institutions. The
Delegation, present in the US capital for 50
years, was granted diplomatic status in 1971. It is currently headed by
Ambassador
John Bruton.
The scope of the transatlantic relationship has grown enormously in recent
years, and the Delegation’s activities cover all major areas including
trade, political, economic & financial, development, agriculture, consumer
policy, transport, energy, environment, science & technology, press and
media and communications and public affairs. The Delegation’s
internship
program provides students interested in international relations with the
opportunity to acquire considerable knowledge of the European Union, its
institutions, policies, activities and relations with the US.
The Press Team of the Press & Public Diplomacy Section (PPD) handles all relations with the media
throughout the United States. They inform on the European Commission’s
policy positions on a broad range of issues and provide the media with
information on current developments in the European Union. Concurrently, the
Press Team monitors the US print and audiovisual media and provides information
about breaking news, political developments and issues of interest to the
European Union. Interns with the Press Team will gain hands-on experience in a
fast-moving news environment. They are fully integrated into the team and
may be given significant responsibilities in all aspects of the section’s
activities — including helping to organize important media events and
strategies to implement them, media analysis, research support and project
coordination. The Press Team seeks dynamic, outgoing, creative individuals
with previous experience in the media field and excellent writing, internet
research and computer skills.
Preference is given to candidates available on a full time basis, i.e.,
35-40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for a minimum period of four
months. Please note that internships at the Washington Delegation are offered
exclusively on a volunteer (unpaid) basis.
Internships are offered three times a year in keeping with the "semester
calendar" from: September through December (Fall semester); January through
May (Spring semester); June through August (Summer session).
All applications must contain a cover letter indicating the reasons for
