European Commission President Romano Prodi: Summary of Remarks Made during the Joint Press Conference

It was a very good meeting, because we concentrated on concrete decisions.

We have launched the talks for the creation of a transatlantic open aviation area.  This will change the aviation transport industry and will provide better service, lower prices and more choice for the 11 million people who cross the Atlantic every year and even more in the future.

Second, we are starting a major joint research effort on hydrogen energy. This is important for the future and shows that we can work together, even on an issue which touches on the border of other issues on which we have disagreement, such as Kyoto.

Third, we have decided to have joint responsibility for making the Doha Development Round a success. Without close cooperation between Europe and the US, there will be no success and we cannot afford to fail because the Third World will be heavily damaged. On this aspect, we also exchanged our views on the major reform of the common agricultural policy that Europe is trying to do.

I fully agree with the President [Bush] when he recently declared that, when Europe and US are united, no problem and no enemy can stand against us. This is the real lesson. I would only add that if we fail to unite, every problem may become a crisis.

To end this with a brief analogy, many people have said that Europe is too old. Maybe, but old age helps us to understand our strengths and our weakness and the reality of the world. And so I say that if we stay alone, President, Europe is too old and the United States too young to be able to bring peace in this world, and it is our duty to stay together to bring peace to the world.
