AMBASSADOR'S CORNER

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM AMBASSADOR JOHN BRUTON

September 1, 2005

As the scale of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation in the southern United States continues to grow, I want to share with you my deepest sympathy and the sympathy of the people of Europe, who stand in solidarity with Americans.

We mourn beside you for your dead and for your many other losses.

I have not yet had the opportunity to visit all the states hit by the hurricane, but I had the chance to travel to Louisiana this past spring and I found myself enchanted by its history, its beauty, and most importantly, its people.

It greatly saddens me to ponder the dimensions of the tragedy there and in the surrounding area. Although these events leave us awestruck by the brute strength of nature, they also reveal the resiliency and greatness of the human spirit. As we are all watching the mobilization of the whole nation, we admire the extraordinary courage, humanity and compassion that you have shown in tending to those in need.

And we all know that nations that can set such an example of brotherhood are those that can overcome tragedies and unprecedented catastrophes.

I trust, as other travails have proven, that this region will in time heal and thrive.

Please send me your comments about this or any of my weekly messages, or other EU matters. I look forward to hearing from you!
