Ambassador Bruton
speaks to students at Atherton High School in
Louisville, Kentucky.
Ambassador John
Bruton is undertaking an outreach and education
campaign focused on young Americans, including
high school students.
Since beginning his tenure as the Head of Delegation
of the European Commission in November 2004,
Ambassador Bruton has made a concerted effort
to speak with students both in Washington, DC,
and outside the Beltway. “It’s important
to talk to the young people of this country.
They’re the future leaders and decision-makers,”
said Bruton.
In February, Bruton visited Georgetown
Day School in Washington, DC, where he spoke
to high school seniors about the European
Constitution, the role of the EU
in the world and the various European
institutions. He then took questions. “I
could have been at a press conference. The questions
were extremely sophisticated,” said Bruton.
During a trip to Kentucky
in early March, the Ambassador visited Atherton
High School in Louisville, where he again was
impressed by the high level of knowledge about
the EU.
To celebrate
Europe Day on May 9, Ambassador Bruton plans
to visit another Washington-area high school.
He and fellow ambassadors from EU Member States
will visit a number of local schools to talk
to students about the European Union and take
their questions.
